What is GST Registration ?

To register as a normal taxable person, the process of GST registration is mandatory for businessmen whose turnover exceeds ₹ 40 Lakh. This process is known as GST registration. For North Eastern and hill states, the mandatory turnover limit for businessmen is ₹ 10 Lakh. The process of GST registration usually takes 2-6 working days. With the GST bill approved by the President and the GST council busy finalizing the rules and regulations, all existing businesses registered under central excise, service tax or VAT need to register under GST using an online registration process.

Need of GST Registration

The GST Registration will confer the following advantages to a taxpayer:

  • The Taxpayer will be legally recognized as a supplier of goods or services.
  • He would be legally authorized to collect tax from his customers and pass on the credit of the taxes paid on the goods or services supplied to the purchasers/ recipients.
  • He can claim input tax credit of taxes paid on his purchases / procurements and can utilize the same for payment of taxes due on supply of goods or services.
  • Seamless flow of Input tax credit from suppliers to recipients at the national level

Consequences of Not Registering for GST

  • If you don’t register for GST, there are some serious consequences. According to the Goods and Service Tax Act of 2017 in India, if you’re supposed to register for GST but you don’t, you’ll face a penalty. This penalty can be as much as ₹10,000 or the amount of tax you tried to avoid paying, whichever is more.

  • If you don’t submit your GST returns on time, you’ll have to pay a late filing fee. If you don’t pay your GST taxes on time, you’ll also be charged interest on the amount you owe. Not following GST rules could lead to your GST registration being suspended or canceled.

  • If you don’t follow the GST rules, you could face a fine of up to ₹25,000. You might get fined each time you don’t follow the rules. Besides the fine, you might also need to pay interest on any taxes you owe but haven’t paid on time.

GST Registration Benefits

Input tax credit and lower cost: Once the supplier of goods or services has obtained the registration under GST, he can take credit of the GST paid to the previous supplier concerning business activities. The decreased cost of inputs lowers the pricing of supplies.

Simplified and permanent registration: The online registration process is simplified with the assistance from LW experts. With the completion of the registration process, the certificate is granted to the applicant stating the GST registration number, which is called GSTIN.

Legally recognized as Supplier: With compulsory or voluntary registration under GST, the supplier is eligible to collect the taxes legally. Further, the supplier can also pass on the credit. The voluntary registrant also gets equal status and responsibilities of taxpayer registered under the mandatory criteria.

Easy compliance requirements: Upon registration, every registrant is liable to fulfil compliance in the form of return filing in a periodical manner. These compliance requirements are simplified under the GST regime. It is also proposed to simplify the compliance through single return filing from multiple filings.
